Growing up in Bangalore, I’ve seen firsthand how urban waste management struggles to keep up with rapid city growth. I wanted to design a solution that would make recycling effortless and rewarding—something that would appeal to young people like me. That’s how Trashback was born—a mobile app that gamifies waste recycling by offering incentives for proper disposal.

Trashback makes recycling simple by letting users schedule waste pickups right from the app. Users segregate their waste before pickup, earning reward points for responsible disposal. These points can be redeemed for a tree planted in their name, and with more points, even houseplants—turning recycling into a habit that gives back to both the environment and the user.

The biggest challenge was making waste management exciting. Through user research, I realized that a rewards-based system with a sleek, youth-friendly UI would increase adoption. I also focused on microinteractions to create a smooth and engaging user experience. This project taught me how to balance functionality with engagement, ensuring that sustainability doesn’t feel like a chore.
